Netgear DG834GT - cannot access router

Have just bought a Netgear DG834GT router to replace the standard BT box, and have read postings here on BT configuration, but I cannot even get that far!

With the router connected by ethernet, followed the installation instructions but opening IE and entering the router IP address 192.169.0.1 - I get 'page not found'.

Running ipconfig shows no address in the default gateway. Connected router to a laptop, also running XP Pro, and the router configuration page came up instantly (Still didn't get to connect to BT, but a previous thread here should help there).

So, the implication seems to be that there is not a problem with the router, but some other problem on my PC.

    1 Can anyone help?
2 Is it likely that if I tried the wireless connection, the result would be the same?
3 If I were to set configure the router via the laptop and make the BT connection, would that set up work for my problem computer - if I just plugged it into a second port?

Tried that and anyway 192.168.0.1 is the correct address, as on my laptop, I can bring up the config screen, but not on my desktop.

I have disabled the Zone Alarm firewall (actually cloed down ZA), check the browser settings as per Netgear's support info suggests (was also on the phone to Netgear support for an hour but they could not help me . . . .

Thanks for getting back to me - nice to know there is someone out there!

I will check that again, but I never turned the Windows firewall on as I was using Zone Alarm instead.

Am going to spend some (more) time wrestling with the thing over the weekend!
