can you get to wireless sercurity?, if you can set security to disable to start with, just to make sure you're getting wireless

with no security set anyone within reach can use your wireless network

We'll go through setting security afterwards

found it! yes, disabled it. was set to wep or some such. whatever. ok, wireless radio and the other one i said both enabled. the name of the ssid is NETGEAR.

brain_damage has informed us that he will be absent for a few days.

I, myself, have little wireless experience but I tried searching Netgear. They advise setting up with the CD Wizard and I cannot find an online version but there is a manual and other bits of info:

    http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WPN824.asp

When you click that link you will see two versions of that router which link to manuals; setup guides; etc.

Let us know if this helps.

i got to the wizard by following brain damage's instructions. according to the wizard, everything's set up ok, it's just i don't know how to make the computer 'talk' to the router once i unplug the ethernet adaptor! I can't seem to work the xp setup thing, I don't have a clue!

I just don't know how to work it. the router's obviously fine, the old laptop is working away no probs. (am on it just now)

I would compare the two machines' IP configs. As before go to Start > Run > cmd

    Then type: ipconfig /all

Do this on each machine so we can compare the differences.

To post this info you can right click in the CMD box and choose select all then right click again.

This will have copied it to your clipboard.

Open a Notepad: start > all programs > accessories > notepad

Paste the clipboard into the notepad by activating the window then press Ctrl V

Do this for both computers so we can compare each ipconfig.

Let me know if I am too confusing

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
The old laptop is running '98? Or?

    Try either: command.exe or cmd.exe

To compare the two would be the most informative.
