Can i use a ethernet switch from a router?

I hope this question is not as complex as i seem to think it is...

I am struggling to find out if i can attach a ethernet swith to a router, i dont think it reads well personally, but the scenario is, in my room i have my ethernet wire from the router which connects to the pc.

If it is possible i would like to attach a switch to that wire, so i can then run a wire from that switch to the pc, and then another wire to a xbox360/laptop etc!

If anyone knows this is possible i would be greatful of their comment, and if they could explain perhaps, will it slow down the connection of effect the router etc?

    Many Thanks!

Yes you can do that. Before I moved house the upstairs pcs were set up that way. I had an ethernet cable going upstairs from the downstairs router, then plugged into a switch which the upstairs pcs were connected to. I didn't notice any slowdown with the connection.

Wow thats just what i wanted to hear!!! Thanks Jaynee for the quick response!!

Just to finish off... i assume i can use a straight ethernet cable with the switch, i don't need to invest in a crossover cable?

Yes you can use a straight through cable. If my memory serves me correctly a crossover cable is for when you are connecting 2pcs together, with one as the host.
