You mean you want to be host of the hotspot? You can do this by contacting an ISP that offers this. Usually, this is not a cheap thing to do. If you just wanted have wireless internet, in your house for ex., you can buy a wireless router.

    Am I understanding you correctly?

Sorry, I was way off. So you want to connect to a building that has a public wireless network? Does your laptop have built in wireless network? Or you can use a USB or card.

If you have XP and a wireless card, you should be able to right-click the wifi connection in the taskbar or in connections, and click "view available wireless networks".

thats about right, my laptop has wireless networking, but i want to be able to connect long range to a public network, ie here in the UK we have hotspots but you need to be no more than approx 30m away from them, what i looking for is the same sort of thing but over longer distances - like .5 - 1 mile, ant ideas?

Cell Phone companies often have services for these. Contact your's, that is the only way I know of to do what you want.
