Router hates me

Router hates me
Okay, I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 with a wireless card. Most of the time I don't have any problems. But when I come to my parents' house for a weekend or something and try to use their internet connection, it's squirly as hell. My computer will insist that it is connected all the time, but the internet will cut out every few minutes. I think the network itself is the issue-- my sister has had similar problems with her computer. My parents have never noticed it, most likely because they don't use messengers or anything that requires a constant internet connection, and they just think that the page is loading slow when in reality the connection has died. I don't know what to do about it. Is it the router, the internet (they have comcast high speed), my computer, or what? And more importantly, how can I make it better? I'm moving back in with them for at least six months in a month, and I'd really like to have steady internet while I'm here. Any advice?
(Note: I have very little working knowledge of computer technology. You tell me to do something and I can probably do it, but I can't figure out the problem on my own.)
(Second note: the router is linksys, if that helps)

Hi and welcome to D-A-L
can you connect to the router using wires?
Try that to see if that helps
