Hi, i have recently ordered a modem/router from BT and i was wondering how to connect it up to my PC. My last modem connected to my USB port but i was wanting to know if i needed a Network Interface Card (NIC) to connect it to. My computer doesnt have a NIC at the moment but if it was essential i would get a Ethernet Network adaptor. Would this be ok?
What's the make and model of the modem/router you ordered? I'll be happy to check into this for you![]()
Thanks. Its a BT Voyager 240 Wired ADSL Router.
You will indeed need a NIC in your PC to connect to this router. They can be had for less than £10 online. The router will come with the necessary cables to connect the router to your phone line so the other thing you may need is an ethernet Cat5 patch cable to connect the NIC to the router, although there may be even one of those in the box.
The only router manufacturer that I know of that can connect via USB is Draytek.
As an aside, you will find an ethernet connection to the router much more stable than a USB modem.
I dont really want to open up my PC to install a NIC cause i wouldnt have a clue what i was doing. Would it be possible to use a USB Network Adaptor like this one? http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/0862603
Yeah you could use a usb adapter but as BigT said a USB connection won't be as stable as a ethernet connection using straight CAT 5. But it should work ok for you. HERE are the specs on the router your getting.![]()
Ok. Thank you for your help.![]()

I believe DJNafey has some network cards going for £5 in his online QXL auctions if you check his signature. If you can put lego together I promise you'd be able to install a NIC!

Install the software that comes with the nic, shut down the computer, open the case, use a grounding strap or make sure to touch a bare metal part of the case before reaching inside and touching any components. Now find an empty pci slot (PCI slots are white) now take the screw out holding the slot cover, stick the nic in the slot and put the screw back in (Be carefull not to over tighten the screw) and that's it. Put the cover back on and start the computer. Windows will find the drivers you installed earlier and take care of the rest. Clear as mud eh?If you need further assistance post back and I'll find you a good tutorial on installing a NIC.
