    Trying to go wireless !!

I have a "wi-fi" enabled" Toshiba laptop, and have Wanadoo as my ISP. Bought a Netgear DG834G Modem router at the weekend so that i could go wireless. Followed all the connection instructions, but the only way I can connect to the internet is with the ethernet cable that came with the modem router connected to it & laptop. With it disconnected, the laptop locates my wireless network, but will not connect to it. Tried the Netgear support line, and they went through the router settings etc and said everything appears OK - must be a problem with the laptop. Tried Wanadoo for a 2nd opinion & they advised me to remove my Speedtouch software, and also disconnect my existing McAfee Firewall - this didn't help either.
Am I doing something obviously wrong here ?? ( Any help - much appreciated )

I see one suggestion which is to turn off DHCP:
For small networks like a home network, you can add some extra protection by turning off the DHCP, or automatic IP addressing, feature of the router and manually assigning static IP addresses.

Refer to your wireless network router or access point owner's manual for details about how to access the administration and configuration screen and disable the DHCP functionality. Once you do that, you will need to configure each one of your wireless network devices with a static IP address rather than for automatically acquiring IP address information using DHCP.

To find out what you current IP address information is, you can follow these steps:

    Click Start followed by Run.
    Type command followed by Enter
Type ipconfig /all in the command prompt console and press Enter
The results displayed will tell you the device's current IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway as well as the current DNS Servers among other things
To reconfigure the IP address settings of a device in Windows, follow these steps:

Click Start followed by Control Panel
    Click Network Connections
Locate the device you want to configure
    Right-click it and select Properties
Under the this connection uses the following items: window, scroll to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)] entry and click on the Properties button.
Select the radio button next to use the following IP address and enter the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway of your choosing (use the information extracted above as a reference)
Select the radio button next to use the following DNS server addresses and enter the DNS server IP addresses from the information extracted above.
You can also use ipconfig /all to compare the settings between being wired and then wireless.

I guess by now you will probably have this sorted but just in case you haven't I had exactly the same problem on replacing my older Toshiba laptop. The new one was detecting the wireless connection but not connecting to it. In the end I gave up for the night & switched the laptop off [i.e. not in hiberate or standby mode]. The next day I rebooted & it connected straight away. If you haven't got it sorted reply to this & I'll go through my settings with you.

Thanks for the suggestion - still no joy though.
Every setting looks right, even using laptop on battery in case it was the shared power supply knocking things out !!!!
Laptop still shows the available wireless networks - but just won't connect to it.
    Your settings might help........thanks !!!!

*****Finally sorted the problem out - now running wirelessly.******
Reset the modem router - ignored the Netgear set-up instructions, and finally it worked !!!!
Many thanks for your help though....much appreciated
