My main PC is connected to a Belkin ADSL Wireless Router via a LAN cable with no problems. My second PC has a Belkin USB Wireless Adaptor. Half of the time the second PC connects to the router and the internet fine on boot. The other half of the time I have to do a "Repair" to the wireless connection. This is usually successful but a bit of a pain. Any suggestions?
Regards to all.
Simpson.
I am unfamiliar with USB adapters but I do see this reply to a similar issue for what it's worth:
I also see that using ipconfig /release and or /renew works the same as a connection "Repair".Under the authentication tab for your adapters properties, do you have a check
mark in the box to authenticate? If you do, that could be your problem.
Another point raised is whether you have another network card in the computer?
If so it is advised to disable it.
Thanks for your quick response as always. There is no authentication tab in the adapter properties and indeed it connects fine some of the time. There is a LAN card as well on the PC but it is disabled. I'm still baffled and as you know I like things 100% (some hope with XP and wireless perhaps!).
Thinking along the same lines as Jephree about IP addresses being renewed, you could try setting a permanent IP address in the wireless connection properties (TCP/IP properties). Firstly, go to a command prompt (click the Start Menu > Run and then type cmd and click OK). Type ipconfig /all to see what IP address your wireless connection is using. Then go into the connection properties under Network and Dial-Up Connections, edit the TCP/IP settings and get it to permanently use the same IP address, subnet mask and gateway. Make sure, though, that this is not the same IP address that the main PC is using.
If you're having an intermittent issue due to DCHP on the router not correctly giving your 2nd PC an IP address every time, then this should solve it.
Bear in mind that the DHCP server's function is now being bypassed on the second PC so, if you add a third PC to the network, you'll have to give that one a permanent unique IP address as well or change the settings on the DHCP server for what address range it can use.
Let us know if that helps![]()
I'm having a similar problem to you, my PC has a broadband/ethernet card (not to knowledgable about it) and it also has a wireless card, it used to work just fine but recently it refuses to register that it is connected tyo a wireless network, it'll say " your pc is nwo connected to blah blah blah," but when I go to open a internet page my dial-up connection thing will pop up!?!?.....if I click the cancel button or close it, my computer won't register that I'm connected to the internet and wont go to any web pages.......I've tried almost everythign you can think of, but also with my broadband I'll have it plugged in with a cord to the router and I keep havign troubles with the IP address?.....so I have to keep doing like you, repairing the connection.......then sometimes it wont repair it because it says it is having trouble "renewing my IP address" ?!?!?......someone please help, otherwise I'm afraid I'm gonna have to throw this thing out the window....literally......lol....thanks to all who reply.
