    Lan Connections Rejected

Hey i recently moved to uni. I a staying in a Hall of Residence and have a LAN connection in my room. I am able to access the internet and email etc but am unable to connect such programs as MP3 sharing and Games to the internet. I think there may be a block that the administrator has set up to restrict such usages of the ethernet/internet connection.

The first trouble i had was i was unable to play games over the net as when the programs searched for users the searches came up blank.

Next i tried to connect MORPHEUS to the internet. MORPHEUS is a MP3 sharing network and i tried to change the set up, and nothing worked. I have set up the proxy settings but the connections will not connect. Damn it!!

If you could help me out or enlighten me to my situation i would be increadibly greatfull.

    Thanks a million, Zac

I think the quickest first step is to ask your Resident Adviser or Administrator or check your documentation for what is available and what is not.

If you find that there are no blocks in place then we could try to troubleshoot specific issues.

Get an apartment and your own private connection.

Get a wireless laptop and find local Hot Spots.

    Find an unrestricted Internet Cafe.

As your using the connection thru' the uni, you'll have to go by the restrictions they set. or do as jephree says

As a network administrator myself, I can tell you that there is absolutely no way around the blocks that your university's IT team have put in place. They are blocking specific ports on the network that games and file-sharing applications use. If they give you an Internet connection and they say that it's for typical uni work use, then I'm afraid that that really is what they mean ..... and they've enforced it in such a way that you can't break the rules.
