slow wireless network
Hello all, I have a problem with a slow wireless network. I am subscribed to a wireless network provided by a company called NNU (Network Near U) and my connection is really bad at times. i use a Linksys WMP54GX i have full stength and my average DL speed is less than 3k if that and my UL is about 1k. I call the tech support and all they have to say is the router need a reboot, or there are 10 people loged in. there is nothing we can do. i have been told that they have a DSL line through BellSouth supplying the connection. the only thing i can think of is that they have the cheapest DSL line bellsouth offers. i have to go out in town to a cyber cafe and play (world of warcraft). the only other option i have for a connection is dial-up.

Hi, thanks for your post. What's the maximum bandwidth that you've subscribed to? Are you expecting it to be an 'up to 1Mbps' connection, an 'up to 512Kbps' connection, etc?
Try it at different times of day. Morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening and very late at night could give you all completely different results. This will tie up with what tech support have said about the number of people connected meaning that it's running slow. If you can get onto it at a time of day when hardly any else will be, then that's fairly conclusive. This 'phenomenon' is due to something known as the contention ratio. Contention is the number of people sharing your available connection. If you're the only one on the line, then you'll get full bandwidth. If you and someone else are downloading, then you'll only get your download half as quickly. And, if 10 people are on the line at the same time, well, you can work it out!
Let us know the results of the trial and we can then work out if anything can be done
