been trying for months to set up my pc to allow my laptop to connect to it and through the internet keep getting limited or no connectivity and i am using a cross over cable windows xp professional on pc and xp home on laptop
could someone plz help thanx

Probably best for us to go back to basics and start with a fresh network connection rather than try to understand and diagnose all the intricacies of the connection that you already have.
Try running the Windows Network Setup Wizard on the laptop, get the connection set up and then follow the option to create a disk that you can put into the desktop PC to automatically set up a suitable connection on that.

rite i have done that it seemed to solve that thanx loads but now i have a conflict with the IP adress on them now

Go to the Start Menu, Run. Type cmd and click OK. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all. That will tell you what your current TCP/IP settings are. You need to set a new IP address, all the same apart from the last number - increase this by a couple. For example, if it's 192.168.0.2 now, you want to set it to 192.168.0.3.
What you need to do now then is to go into My Network Places and click the link to view network and dial-up connections. Right-click the new network connection and go into Properties. Double-click the TCP/IP entry in the list. Set one of them to a a fixed IP address, e.g. 192.168.0.5 will probably work, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway address of 192.168.0.1.
