Wireless network - Internet ok, but no printer or file sharing
I have a Linksys WAG54G Wireless Router operating a home wireless network consisting of a Desktop (Main with printer attached) and Laptop. Both PCs use Win XP.
I have not used the network for some time, but I now find it no longer fully works. I can get to the web from both, but the laptop cannot printer or file share. I have checked all the settings under the sun to no avail. Browsing through various articles I found a Microsoft Article on troubleshooting home networking in Win XP. Following their guidance I tried the ping command, but received no response from the desktop to the laptop or vice versa. I then checked the Network Adapters via the Device Manager, but all was well. The next stage recommended by Microsoft was to reset the TCP/IP. I am very wary of going down that road until I am absolutely sure it cannot be something else.
My confusion lies in the fact that the wireless network operates fine for the internet, but not the file/printer sharing.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Gareth

PS Hope this is ok with the forum administrator, could not think of another way of updating. Apologies if not the way to do things!

I seem to have resolved the issue! I thought I would post it in case anyone has similar problems. The "rogue" element was Symantec Norton Firewall. There are 2 options
1. Turn it off completely, though this leaves the PC open to attack. Perhaps just have it open for the time you require to share only (and pray!)
2. Go into the Network tab under the Firewall and allow the IP address of the PCs which feature in your network.
I checked on the web to see if other people had similar problems and there were tons! The later option worked for some people, so it is worth trying that first.
Hope this is of help to someone.
