I have two roommates and we use a linksys router to connect to the internet. One of us is directly connected to the router and the other two use wireless access cards. I'm one of the ones with the wireless connection.

I can't connect to the router setup tool (http://192.168.1.1). That doesn't connect. I also tried what my computer says is my IP address (192.168.2.1), but I still can't connect.

The linksys website says you can't connect to the router if you're on a VPN. I'm not sure if I am. Is there a way to tell?

I want to connect to the setup screen so I can configure port forwarding and such...

edit: when connecting to IP address or Default Gateway I get a Connection Failure Error. "The browser was unable to connect to the specified site, even though it exists."

as far as i'm aware only the main pc that is connected to the router can access the router setup page, all seetings to the router has to be made via this main pc, so you'll have to get access to the main pc and setup the router from there with your pc's ip address ect...

Okay. Well, when I was, er, "borrowing" the neighbor's wifi I could access the router setup page from my computer, so I figured this would be the same. Guess not.

Sprocket, you can access the router setup from any computer connected to the network as long as you know the IP adress and password. Just FYI

The screen shot below was taken from my Laptop & I'm nowhere near the main computer it's about 500 ' away in my office & I'm in my shop. LOL

Well, it was the only way to get around the firewall...and I only used it because my computer was auto-connecting to it (and it only ever seemed to pop up when my normal internet wasn't working...So, technically, I don't even know if it was the neighbor's wifi or an alternate version of mine).

So, since you CAN connect to it from anywhere, what am I doing wrong?

I think I may have figured it out. I think linksys, in their 'infinite wisdom,' decided that for security reasons you can only connect to the admin panel if you are physically connected to the router. So now I have to find a long arse ethernet cable...

Are you sure that it isn't that your IP address configuration is wrong? If your network mask is 255.255.255.0, which most home users use, then 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1 aren't on the same network segment so they won't be able to connect. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 should work OK. Your housemates would need to be something like 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.4 in order to join in.

Incidentally, you aren't on a VPN.
