Modem problems connecting - port already open.

    Hi all,

Every time I try to log onto the internet I have to remove and reinstall the modem driver, remove the comm port from device manager and reboot the PC - all of the above several times, before I am able to connect to the internet.

When I try diagnostics in the modem section of control panel it says the port is already open.

I cannot find a program holding the modem open and thought maybe its not disconnecting proberly when I log off. I downloaded BT Yahoo as my dial up software and with it came a bit of software called BT Modem lock. It shows a nice little padlock at the bar at the bottom and I am supposed to unlock it before I use the modem but I get a message from this software saying that it cannot communicate with the modem.

This is a 56K AMR modem by Asrock. I heard that AMR modems have problems with Windows ME when I spoke to a technician for the shop I bought the PC in. He said upgrade to Windows XP.

    Hope you can help.

Problem is still occuring virtually every time I switch on. Tonight I had to reboot 3 times after removing the modem driver and removing COM 1 in Device manager. The modem worked after the reboots.

You could try downloading this open port scanner to identify which port is causing the problem. http://www.sofotex.com/Open-Port-Sca...ad_L20306.html

Hi, I dowloaded and ran the scanner with these results ....

    current port 65535

Port 110 Secure : Yes Common Use : Pop Server
Port 2010 Secure : Not Known Common Use :

Unsure if its a software port problem or a hardware port problem.

As it stands when I switch on the PC and try to connect to the internet the dial up screen says ....

    Checking connection details ....
    Connection details OK

It should then dial but it doesn't. When it works it says

    Checking connection details ....
    Connection details OK
    dialing attempt 1
    dialing
    verifying username and password
    username and password verified
    Connected

When I reboot it usually works though sometimes it takes several reboots.
    Ideas and new suggestions welcome.

Remove Your Bt Connection Software Then Reload It , This Worked For Me , But When You Get Back On The Net , Bt Will Try And Point You Back To That Update Again So Be Careful !!

Yes I agree with hoojafudge, I had the same problem with the freeserve connection kit. I deleted it and things were a lot better. However I still had occasional problems exactly the same as the ones you are experiencing.

Have removed and reloaded the BT Yahoo connection software and tested over a few days. Its still the exactly the same and is not working.

Not sure what "That update" is mentioned by Hoojafudge. Also the problem is very consistent - it never works first time. I rebooted twice tonight after removing and reinstalling the driver and the comm port each time to get it to work.

Thanks guys, but new ideas welcome.
