I can't see my Router Configuration screen

    Hi All

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum!!!

I have 2 laptops and one belkin wireless modem & router with card. One of the laptops can connect to the Internet using either the Wireless card or using a cable (both with no problems). However with the 2nd laptop, I cannot connect to the internet using either card or cable.

For some reason, with laptop 2 I do not get the router configuration screen when I type the router IP address 192.168 etc etc in Windows Explorer. In the past Laptop 2 has worked ok.

As I can use laptop 1 ok, I am assuming Router and Modem are all set up fine, and problem is either to do with settings made in laptop 1, or more likely I have deleted or changed something in laptop 2.

All the settings seem to be the same in both Laptops.

I have tried to delete the 2 LAN's in Laptop 2, to recreate (don't know if this is the correct way of going about it or not). Either way I'm unable to delete them.

I'm using Windows XP Home edition with service pack 2

All I want to do is for both laptops to be able to surf the net. I'm not interested in sharing files or printers etc etc

    Can anyone help

    Thanks

    Steve

    Hi sprocket

Thanks for your reply. I've tried connecting both ways, i.e. with laptop1 already connected and without already being connected. No joy either way.

Not sure how to answer your question, have i tried to re-install the drivers?

I think I have (if that means try update driver which requires insert disk). That said could not be update as I already had the latest version

    Thanks

sorry for not making Q? clear, what i'm saying is this, you have installed the router drivers on your #1 laptop? and you can connect to the internet and also the routers setup page, yes?
right if that is the case then you do not need to install the routers software onto #2 laptop, all you have to do is just plug in your network cable to the #2 laptop and then into the second port of your router, so all looks like this,
    laptop #1,
cable from #1 laptop to first port in router, install router software and make settings, #2 laptop,
cable from #2 laptop to second port in router, no configeration needed if using windows XP,
but you might need to run "Set up a home or small office network" until again to get it to see your router.
hope this helps and is not as clear as mud again....lol...
    good luck,
    Dave..

    Hi Dave

Thanks for your speedy reply. Yes, you are correct, laptop one can connect to internet and also to the router setup page if i enter the IP address.

I have tried previoulsy with laptop 2 to just plug into router ports 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 (with no success for any) all whilst Laptop 1 was wired in. The port recognises the cable is in (i.e light remains on for that port)

I will however, try again this evening (as I can't 100% say that I had Laptop 1 in port 1 and laptop 2 in 2) - does this really matter?

I have may have tested different like laptop 1 in port 3 and laptop 2 in port 2

I have not yet tried to create a network using the wizard...so maybe this is the problem, I have seen the Wizard but was unsure of what settings to make. I also thought I only needed to create Network if I wanted to share files or a printer. I don't need this. I just need the 2 laptops to be able to surf the net

    Thanks again for your help

you need to run the wizard for the two computers to see each other,
    please try the following,
have laptop #1 switched on and connected to the router, then plung in laptop #2 to the router and run the network wizard, the wizard will see your router and also your #1 laptop and configer it's self,
thats all you should have to do.
    best of luck.

    Hi Dave

Once again thanks for your help!!

I tried running the wizard at the weekend. But still no internet!! Both laptops were wired to the router (ports 1 and 2).

I tried pinging the IP Address for both laptops (both sent and received 4 packets) although laptop 2 had timing of 0, whereas the good laptop (1) had timing of 1.

I also ran Ipconfig/All for both laptops and this seemed to produce the same
    values where expected

The error i get on the interent page, cannot display page, seems to refer to DNS servers.

Any ideas on what to try next?

    Thanks

    Steve
