Network Places----Unable to see

I have two computers connected by wired router. The operating systems are XP Pro. Both computers are connected to the LAN. One works as programed. On the other I cannot see My Network Places. When I click on "My Network Places" I get a blank screen. It does not even show the files and printers this computer has authorized to share. The LAN connection shows the computers are connected at 100Mbps. Would appreciate any help on how to correct this problem.
Thanks for the assistance.

Try going into the properties of the network card and setting the link speed / duplex options to 100Mbps half-duplex instead of Auto-detect, which they are normally on by default. You might need to do this on both PCs. I'm not sure why this should make a difference but it always seems to be the answer when I've got this kind of problem on PCs on the office (so much so that I always change the setting on any new PC that I set up).
Let us know if that makes any difference

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem. The two computers are linked through D-Llink router. Both can access the Internet and are linked. Upon further researching the problem I found some hint that Computer Browser Resources might be a contributing factor. I found, on the computer where I am unable to see the networking places, that computer browser resources are off and I cannot restart it. When I attempt to start I receive the following error message: "error-could not start the computer browser services on local computer. Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start." Unfortunately I lack the experience and knowledge to correct this problem. The Computer Browser Resource is started on the computer that displays the shared items on My Network Places. Again, I appreciate your efforts in helping me solve this problem.

There's a Microsoft article that suggests that the Computer Browser service relies on the NetBIOS services. Check that these start OK. Also, if you have a firewall on either PC, check that they have ports 137, 138 and 139 opened for access on the LAN.
If this doesn't help, try starting the service again and then check the Windows Event Log (Control Panel > Administrative Tools) to see whether it has logged a message relating to this. If it has, let us know the error number, application that logged the error and the exact message (a screen grab would be ideal).
Hope that helps

Thanks for the suggestions but nothing worked. Even though the firewall allowed the LAN to work, I shut them down to see if that would have an effect. It did not. I am of the opinion that some setting or something missing on this computer is the problem. Since the other computer sees this computer and shared documents there is something amiss that I am not smart enough to figure out. I did get an error message and the screen shot should be attached. Please let me know if it does not show up and I will try again. We are about at the pinacle of my knowledge of computers so I do appreciate the help.

I have reviewed my reply and it would appear the screen shot is not there. I am not sure what I did wrong. I went to additional options - attach files - manage attachments - browse the files to the location - slected the file and then clicked upload. Did I miss something?
Thanks

Hi ROM, I've sent you a private message with my email address that you could send it to. Thanks.

Hi ROM, I've received the screengrab. The Service Control Manager recorded an error (event ID 7001), which stated that "The Computer Browser service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start........"
Could you go into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and check the status of the Workstation service at the bottom of the list? If it says "Disabled" or "Manual", double-click it and set its startup parameters to Automatic.
Press the Start button in that screen to start the service up.
If you receive another error when trying to start the Workstation service, let us know what the Windows Event Viewer message for it says (and the Event ID number).
If the Workstation service starts OK, then try starting the Computer Browser service again.
That ought to do it - let us know

It works!!! Thanks a millon. I found the Workstation service was stopped, but changing the startup type to auto or manual did not work because my choices---start, stop, pause, resume---were all grayed out. I then went to the Recovery tab and found that first failure, second and subsequent failures were all set to "take no action". I changed those values to "restart the service". I was then able to start workstation services and, subsequently, computer browser service with no further problems. I then restarted the computer. The network places appeared and work as normal. Thanks a millon for the help.
One other problem that appeared in the last couple of weeks is an error message that I receive when I shut down or restart the computer. The error is a CorUpd.exe-Application error. The error message: The instructions at "0x7c80979d" referenced memory at 0x0042c4f4. The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program.
I have researched this error on the web but have not found a solution to this problem or one that I understand. I have not noticed any program on the computer which this particular error causes a problem. Is there an easy fix, should I just ignore it---or start a new thread?
Thanks again.
