Greetings! I recently setup a 2 pc network one having XPP Sp2 and the other W2kP Sp4. They're link by means of a Linksys router gateway/hub. I shared my C: drive on both machines. However I can only access the the windows xp machine from the windows 2kp but cannot do the same from XPP machine. I was able to do so before. Any help will greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Lefont
You were able to do so before?
Before what? Any new hardware / software?
Firewalls? SP2?
Any error messages?
Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Jeph I checked all the xs but none coincide with the problem at hand. I believe I was able to see the other machine before and after sp2 installation. I had to wipe the machine, and right after that nothing worked. Keep in mind that I had Norton Security installed at the time it worked as well as right now. Its a very odd thing wouldn't you say?![]()
Lefont.
You had to wipe the machine; and right after that nothing worked?
You mean you reinstalled XP? & SP2?
Did you reinstall the NIC Card drivers?
Did you rerun the Network Setup Wizard?
I prefer not to run any wizards when it comes to network setup. The drivers for the nic card were not necessary, since XP pick it up right of way. Im using a linksys nic as well. I did reinstalled XP and SP2. And no, nothing worked.

You probably know more about networks than I do. That being said I can only offer speculating questions.
Why did you have to reinstall XP? Did you do a Clean Install? How are you trying to setup the network?
Are you getting error messages? What happens?
Can you think of any differences from the way it was when it worked? Firewall settings? Are you running Norton & SP2's wall?
& maybe just for the heck of it: try running the wizard.
Jeph while I appreciate you honesty just because I said certain things it does not mean I know more than you or that you don't know about the subject. We are here to learn by trial an error. Enough said, I'll answer you question and then I will tell you how I fix the problem. I didn't have to reinstall, the problem is that I haven't take the time to search the web ( I have the places to go to on it) for extraordinary tools to protect myself againts trojans and somewhat powerfull spywares (oh yes there are getting good this days Jeph!!). So being that I have not done that I was looking for some applications in a website I've previously visited to download it and BAM!!! It hurts you know JephI got loaded and the reason be was that I by accident went on the Internet without having my Firewall on
. So you see I didn't wanted to have something in my machine feeding some individual my info, etc. Thats why I wipe clean the pc. I did setup the network in the following way: One machine has XPP and the other one 2kP with non-routable IPs (static ips, I gave them my own ip addresses), they're connected to the Linksys router and the router to the cable modem. My officejet g85 is connected to the XPP and shared, that way I can use it with 2kp. And of course I have Norton Firewall and Systemworks. Is pretty simple nothing major. Now the problems was that some cached files, and temporary files were preventing me from sharing. I said this because I ran SystemWorks Clean up (part of the whole suite of Symantec Works 2005) and after that Jeph I was able to see the world. Now one thing I noticed to is that I can see the Workgroup faster. Well, before when I clicked on workgroup it will take years to show me the entire list of pcs on it, which later on stop working and gave me the error in discussion. As for the firewall setting everything was configure fine. But now everying is working accordinly. I do thank you for you suggestion and concern. I'll keep posting more troubleshooting tickets so that we can learn from each other.

Greetings Jeph!yup, I solved the problem. Finally!! I had the cheap firewall of Personal Firewall app installed on the W2k machine and maybe a few other bugs since this is the one I use to access crack websites and so forth. I clean everything up and ran the Systemwork from Norton on it (W2k Pc) and now Im able to connect to it. I unistalled the Personal firewall program.
