local area connection - network cable unplugged ?

I am running Windows XP Home. I am trying to set up a network. I have a Dell desktop and and a Dell notebook connected to a US Robotics SourceConnect ADSL Wireless Gateway - both connected wirelessly. Both connecting to the internet without problems.

I want to network the 2 machines to share files and printers. I have run the network wizard on both machines. But they are not connected. Neither one is visible in My Network Places.

Could the following have something to do with it? In the Network Connections Panel I have a local area connection - which says network cable unplugged. This has always been the case on the deskjet. And when I bought the notebook it was the same.

Can anyone help me. This is driving me nuts!!!

Sounds like both the desktop and laptop have built-in network cards. You can right-click on the Local Area Network connection in the Network Connections control panel and disable it. See if that helps

I now have the network working, I turned off Windows firewall and configured Norton Internet Firewall to allow the IP addresses of each computer. It now works fine. I tried to disable the local area connection as you said, but it wouldn't let me. Said something about protocols. Anyway, now I have the network running I am ignoring the lac. Thanks for replying.

Sounds like the LAN connection is no longer an issue - even if it says that the cable is unplugged, that would not be a problem now because it would be correct: you don't have a cable plugged in.

Good to hear that you've sorted it - thanks for the update
