a simple network setup - not so far!
I'm setting up a network - one desktop and one laptop
Both PCs are running XP with SP2 upgrade.
I've installed a pci network card to the desktop, and used crossover cable (which I know worked).
Ran network wizard on desktop, and wrote to diskette.
Ran diskette program on laptop
Ensured that same workgroup on both
Set up shares on all drives on both machines.
When I click start, connect to, show all connections - under “LAN or high speed internet" on desktop I have ...
1394 connection - 1394 Net Adapter - Connected, Firewalled
Local Area Connection - Linksys LNE100TX - Limited or no connectivity
First point - What is the 1394 connection ?
First problem.
Limited or no connectivity on both machines.
One PC couldn't see the other.
Found a possible solution that advised that this was possibly an sp2 bug issue, and I installed a Microsoft patch on both machines.
I can now see the laptop from the desktop, and for example ran Acronis backup of the desktop C drive to a folder on the laptop.
Second problem
When I try to map a network drive from the laptop to the desktop, I get Not Enough Server Space To Complete
Any ideas?

Rannoch

Your '1394 Connection' is your firewire port.
As seen below Norton might be your problem here:

I've had exactly the same problem when trying to network my new XP SP2 laptop to my old Win2000 desktop in order to copy all my files off with a crossover cable and with a hub and straight cables. I found that, for some reason, I could get connectivity as soon as I ran the Network Setup wizard but not after I had logged off or shut down. So I left both systems running for 4 or 5 days while I found time here and there to copy the 30Gb of clutter that I wanted off of the desktop. I know that's not a very good answer but it might help if you only need the connection temporarily.
The other thing that I checked (which I know has solved connectivity problems at my office) was to look at the Link Speed / Duplex settings in the properties of the network cards. Although almost all network cards default to an "Auto-detect" option, they often don't get it right. I'd recommend setting both cards to 10Mbps and half duplex. If that works, experiment with 100Mbps and then, if it's still OK, you can try full duplex. I think the key here is to keep both cards running the same settings.

Although the link is still "Limited or no connectivity" on both machines I can run Acronis on both machines and the backups are added to each machine.
A side effect of installing the network card is that ocassionally when linked to the internet (dial-up) the disconnect hangs, and the machine needs to be switched off.
Any ideas on this one.
Thanks,
