    linksys wrt54gx

I recently bought a laptop and had a linksys wrt54g wireless router. I connected the laptop wirelessly and had a blast. I did not have any problems surfing wirelessly.

Recently I purchased a linksys wrt54gx. The router seems to be working flawlessly. But do to my curiosity I started noticing something. My connection speed, "the link speed between the router and laptop fluctuates continuosly. It ranges from 54 to 1. Now I know this doesn't effect my internet speed at it is below that but wonder if I should be concerned. I hooked up my old wrt54g and had the same results. is this normal or should I be concerned. I suppose weather can be a factor also

for what it's worth I have the link encrypted with WEP. TIA

For what it's worth I'm having a similar problem with a Linksys WRK54G and Linksys PCMCIA Wireless NIC. Drivers are OK; the wireless laptop connects to all other stations on my network. I've just "upgraded" from a Linksys BEFSR41 which works fine.

The wireless router fails to pick up an IP address through DHCP off the cable modem (a terayon TJ210). I've tried power cycling the modem and cloning the MAC address off my old router TNA. Naturally enough all the systems and routers have been power-cycled.

I've checked the cabling by swapping out with known cables and this is verified good. The setup of the wireless router is *exactly* the same as the wired router, which works fine: DHCP to pick an IP address off the cable modem.

The only info the router gets off the cable modem is the max. transmission unit; no IP or subnet. Releasing / renewing the DHCP lease fails to achieve anything. I've even tried waiting until the DHCP lease expires on my cable modem, powering down completely and starting up with the new router TNA.

FWIW I've tried setting the wireless router using a fixed IP which matches the details supplied by the cable modem to the wired router. This also failed to work.

Oh yeah, and I've also been waiting over a week for Linksys to respond to a courteous e-mail asking if they had any suggestions.

The only thing that I can think of that I haven't yet tested is whether the WAN port is wired up differently on the wireless router to the wired router: it's possible (though it seems unlikely) that a crossover piece may help here.

I've tried NTL who do not support routers anyway, on the offchance they could suggest something. As expected they weren't able to help. To be fair to them the config works under my old router, so this implies that the new one is at fault... the only other issue being that directly connecting any of my PCs to the modem directly also results in no connection being made.

    Any other ideas anyone?

Well, the only concern I have is the fluctuating speed of the wireless link. I have not "lost," connection yet. I also know that it is not the router as the speed flucuates with both so I'm leaning toward the nic built into the laptop.

I've also have this problem with this router. Everytime that I connect my computer directly to my Internet connection it works just fine. However, when I put the router in the picture (between the ISP and my PC) it screw's up my bandwith, specially the upload speeds. I tried this with 3 different wrt54gx routers and had the same results. two routers where v.2 and another v.1 with the latest firmware. I asked a Linksys technician and ofcourse they don't know of any "known-issues" with this breed of routers.
My suggestion is either, get another model or go with D-Link or Belkin.

    Good Luck to us all!
