Windows 98 se laptop can't connect
My laptop can't connect to the net. I so far has re-installed all the drivers and pc card software as well as tcp/ip. I tried ipconfig and it come back with ip configuration failed to initialise winsock. Suggestions from the experts always appreciated so I can get this laptop working right again
Thanks

Found this test:
Typing ‘ipconfig’ at a command prompt gives “IP Configuration Failed to initialize Winsock.”
Fix:
Please have your Windows 98 installation disk ready
1. At the run command dialog box (Start->Run…) type sfc to open the System File Checker utility.
2. Select the ‘Extract one file from the installation disk’ option.
3. In the edit box, type ‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mswsock.dll’
4. Insert your Windows 98 Installation disk into your CD-ROM drive (this example uses drive D).
5. Click ‘start’ on the SFC dialog.
6. In the ‘Restore from:’ edit box, type ‘D:\Win98’ (substituting your CD-ROM drive letter for ‘D’ if yours differs).
7. Click ‘OK’.
8. Click ‘Skip’.
9. After the file has been successfully extracted, repeat steps 3 through 8 but instead of typing ‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mswsock.dll’ in step 3, type ‘C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ws2help.dll’.
10. Reboot.

I found out it was an updated .dll file, can't remember which ones exactly that were causing the issue. I reinstalled the .dll files from my setup disk and got rid of the newer versions, instead keeping the old ones. and now it connects fine. Thanks for the help again.
Guess if I quit trying out new things on my laptp, I would stop causing myself problems, but then again, I would also lose the chance to learn what makes things work. So far I have fixed the backlight on the laptop (broken wire) and I am going to change the cpu and add memory soon. that shouldn't mess it up too much I hope
