Is it possible to connect a PC with linux operating system to an existing network that is accessing the network via a router. The existing network has two pc's one is using windows xp the other is windows 98se.The router is a voyager 200.

as long as they are using standard TCP/IP and you have the gateway IP Address.

Thanks for your reply , I looked at the router settings via its control panel there is a setting Lan configuration - IP address DHCP server 192.168.1.1 is this the gateway you are refering to.The existing windows PC's are set to obain IP address automatically. If I get a network card for the linux PC and connect it to the 5 port ethernet switch that forms my network. then go into the setting up in the linux PC for the network card does this sound viable to you . I believe the existing network is standard TCP/IP. I have installed windows network cards but I havn't done it on linux yet.

Basically Linux will follow the same process that Windows does. When you install the hardware you will need to also install the linux drivers. Once you have that done you will configure the card with the appropriate IP addresses. 192.168.1.1 is your gateway, DNS and DHCP. Linux will need to be setup to also obtain its IP automajically. It will be a little more time consuming depending on your linux setup but it will also be more relieable.

I will get a 10/100 Mbps fast ethernet PCI adapter that spec says it supports linux. The Linux I have just installed is SUSE Linux 9.2. on to a 350Mhz PC I hope to try some of the linux applications to see how they perform

I installed the network card and the system recognised it, then offered me a driver to install. I configured to obtain IP address automatically. I now can get internet access on my linux machine via local network and router.
