Lost internet connection on a network
Hi
I have a home network with three PC's - Main, kids, laptop.
Main connects to the Internet and Kids and Laptop access the internet via a switch thru Main. All 3 PC's can share files - both shared directories and my documents etc.
All are on XP, with firewall turned off and Zonealarms on Main and Kids.
However Laptop cannot access Internet despite being on the network. All settings seem correct and the same as Kids. I have had this problem since I had to install broadband on the laptop (Main had a serious issue and had to be restored). I have removed broadband but still unable to access internet. Bizarely ICQ can and does connect.
I set up the network with all machines on, firewalls off and Main connected to internet. Kids is working fine.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

I wonder if ICQ uses a different port to standard Internet HTTP communication? HTTP needs to be able to access your broadband connection through port 80. You might find that ZoneAlarm is blocking port 80 on Laptop but not on Kids.

I don't think so as I cannot connect with zone alarms turned off. I've tried it with all firewalls off.
I've been trawling the previous posts and checking other things. I can ping both the PC (Main) and the Gateway from the Laptop.
Is there something really obvious, but crucial, I may have missed? The only change to Laptop was I briefly had the broadband modem directly linked to it.

Did you uninstall the Broadband software from the laptop?

Not initially, but I did do later. It is not installed now.
When I try the internet I've looked on the log for Zonealarms and it is blocking access to port 137. Am I trying to access internet through the wrong port? If so how do I change it?
Hope this gives some idea.

Go into your TCP/IP properties (right-click My Network Places and then select Properties from the menu) on Laptop and check that the subnet mask and gateway are the same as on Kids. Also, if there's any DNS server address specified, make sure that that's the same as on Kids.

Another interesting test would be to go into Internet Explorer on Laptop and type the address as http:// followed by the IP address of the gateway. You'd normally get some kind of configuration screen if it was able to see the gateway correctly over the network.

Well in my experience zone alarm and networking do not get along.

Thanks I checked this and now its OK. I did do this once before but not with the PC's side by side. My mistake. Doh!
On the laptop the TCP/IP properties was not set to obtain an IP address automatically. It was on Kids.
Have changed this and now it connects OK.
Thanks for your help.

Yes I have heard this before. What other free option is there?
I actually have Zonealarms Pro on Main, and the free versions on the other 2.

Cool - glad to hear that sorted it
I believe that others on this forum use Sygate and Kerio firewall products.
