    Opening Ports ? (WinXP)

Hey, I am on a Windows XP Pro operating system and am using D-LINK DSL302G ADSL modem (and program that came with it) and i need help on opening ports so that i can run some programs that need open ports.
There's a guide i found for my modem but it doesnt seem to be helping at all.
    http://www.portforward.com/dlink/dsl...forwarding.htm
Also i do not have any anti-virus or firewall programs installed and/or running.
    Any ideas or suggestion ?
    Thanks.

have you thought about installing a firewall either norton or mcaffee i think i am rigth in thinking they would give you a certain ammount of control to which ports were being used

I can't understand why you need to open ports, the applications in question should automatically open the ports you need. Spud is right in the need of a firewall, why not install the free version of Sygate from here.

Thanks for your help. I will try installing the firewall program and see whether it would help. And just to confirm it, file sharing programs such as overnet or edonkey requires you to open ceratin ports in order to connect to certain servers and users online. Thanks once again. I will reply whether the firewall did or didn't work.
