i just formatted my pc due to various reaons, those include certain programs not working etc, and just general lag due to spyware etc
on finishing formatted my pc/ reinstalling windows ( wateva you want to call it) i realised i have no sound wat so ever. iv tried getting drivers but im not really sure what drivers i need? i got drivers for my graphics card and i think theyv worked. i got a 4 in 1 motherboard one which im not sure if that did anything, and no i have no idea what sound ones to get? iv no idea of wat sound card i have! all i really know is that iv got tannoy speakers through a amp. iv tried going on to device manager but my pc really doesnt think i have an sound device as when i try to play a sound file it says "there might not be a sound device installed on your computer" also what codecs do i need? i think iv got ac3 but that didnt do anything, iv got xvid to watch films for that didnt work. please sumbody help me!

also i read sumwhere that told me to run " dxdiag " ( directx diagnostic tool ) and on that it says " No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer. " i tried running the d-a-l hardware test and that too said i had no sound card but i know for a fact i do because it was only a fews days ago that i had sound! thanks again

HI, can you post your hardware scan results or at least give us the name and or model number of your motherboard. It's probably an AC'97 on-board sound chip but it's best knowing for sure. Post back!

This may or may not help but it's worth a shot, download and install Unknown Devices 1.2 from Craig Hart. This little program may be able to identify the sound card so that we can locate the correct drivers for it. HTH

iv tried downloading and installing it and it has found that my "multemedia sound controller" is unrecignised ( it has a question mark next to it) also with this pc came the hardware to watch tv on my pc, since i installed this this to is not working but i have emailed the manufacturers of the software/hardawre but that too has a question mark. it hasent treally helped because it hasent told me what sound card i got

That scan didn't help much as the only thing it left out was the motherboard / sound card information! Is there any other way you can find out exactly what your motherboard is?

Like I said before it's probably an on-board AC'97 chip, it's might be worth just trying the drivers just in case.

hey i managed to sort it!!! my mother board in the end was a fic p4m-800t and i got the uadio on board drivers for it which sorted it and am now listening to music this very moment! thanks for helping il try and help everyone else i can!
