Hi guys I had a Gateway GM5046b system which i took the hard drive out of and the xp key. Basically my motherboard fried and as luck would have it my brother has just bought a £1500 top of the range gaming pc.
So he has given me his old pc which has the following spec
D-A-L Computer Hardware Scan Results
I am running Windows XP Media centre edition. In device manager i have "coprocessor" "SM Bus Controller" and "Unknown" with a yellow exclamation mark next to it.
I have found my motherboard here but i have no idea what revision it is as my brother bought the pc already built up.
I have tried doing a windows update scan but that suggested nothing.
I see there is a bios update but ill look into learning how to do that later as i doubt that is the main problem.
I don't think i have missed anything out, if i have i do apologise.
thanks
Gavin
Does that mean you used the XP install media from the old Gateway PC? In that case, the OEM install would not likely have all the correct needed drivers or have ones missing for purposes of the newly acquired PC (hence the exclamation marks).i took the hard drive out of and the xp key
Some OEM install attempts will often simply not run on systems for other than the equipment it came with.
For one thing you just can't put one installation of windows into another computer or you'll have driver and registry conflicts since an installation of windows is tied to the computer it was installed on.
Two, as Vop stated you can't use an installation disk from one manufacturer on a computer made by another. It will have drivers specific for the computer it came with. You'll have to get a retail copy that was designed to install on pretty much any PC for which the manufacturer has released drivers.
