Is it a Fujitsu Siemens computer or do they just make the motherboard. Generally, you should go out to the computer maker's website and download the drivers for that model number computer.

thanks for your reply Digerati and in response to your question yes it is a fujitsu siemens branded p.c, they made the motherboard but it has intel chipset.. i even know that its called a scenic.. problem is everest tells me the sound adapter is as above;Analog Devices AD1981B(L) @ Intel 82801DB ICH4 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1.. but after spending long hours scouring the net i have come to realise there is no such thing. i have found my computer on the net and tried downloading the drivers for what it says i have, which is as i can gather from matching other info like the motherboard name etc.. as being either:STAC9750,AD198x,AD198x,Realtek ALC655.. on matching my other spec im thinking the ad198x but none of them work :-/ im lost...

You need to install chipset driver: Motherboard Chipset Intel Brookdale-G i845GE

thanks Broni but all sorted now.. had already installed the brookdale chip-set off Intel, I'm pretty sure it did nothing as i still had the same problem's as before. after the re-install of windows i had to find the network, graphics and sound drivers. obviously i got the network drivers first via a friends laptop and from then as you suggested, downloaded the intel chip-set driver described above and it made no change. you wouldn't believe how many forums i searched through with people experiencing the same audio problem with the same chip-set.. i will link a few back here.
