What computer brand, and model is it?
Did you reinstall chipset driver?
-
It is a Compaq Presario Model #SR1010NX
I don't think I have and dont really know how...
-
Download, and install Spring 2004 Original Chipset Driver: Spring 2004 Original Chipset Driver Collection
When done, see, if you have any errors in Device Manager.
-
i tried to install the Chipset driver that you suggested using your posted link and when it extracted a message came up telling me I had to install the driver using the device manager...Like i said above i am a bit new to all of this so what exactly does that mean and how do I do it? The message said "the original drivers are installed in C:\HP\Drivers\Chipset folder. Please install the driver through the device manager."

As to your audio this is all you should need:
Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver Update
-
This is what Compaq page says:
- 1. Download the driver package.
- 2. Double-click on the icon for the driver package downloaded in step 1, and then click NEXT.
- 3. Accept the terms in the HP license agreement, and then click NEXT.
- 4. Click OK to continue. The original drivers are now stored in the C:\HP\Drivers\Chipset folder.
- 5. If Device Manager does not start automatically, use the following steps. Otherwise go to step 6:
- a. Click Start.
- b. Right-click My Computer, and then select Properties.
- c. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button.
- 6. Click the + (plus) sign next to "Other Devices".
- 7. Right-click on "SM Bus Controller" or the device you want to update, and then select Update Driver.
- 8. Click NEXT to install the software automatically
- 9. Click FINISHED to complete the installation.
-
If your only issue is audio all you need is the driver I posted above.
A chipset driver will not restore your audio.
The rest of your drivers are here:
Select software and drivers
-
It depends on what was used to reinstall Windows.
If recovery CD, then everything should work from the get go.
If Windows CD, sometimes without reinstalling chipset driver, other drivers won't work, or they won't install.
IMHO.

OK, so I reinstalled the chipset and the audio driver recommended by the two of you and my errors for those corresponding items went away but still no sound. I have an error message next to "Multimedia Audio Controller" "Microsoft Kernel Audio Device" Now I did try to install audio driver before as per someone else's recommendation and when I did this a few new things came up on my device manager that I do not remember being there it could be that these items dont even belong on my computer. I reinstalled using a windows CD not a recovery CD. Thank you for all the help and I really hope we can resolve this its driving me nuts!!!
