Question cd driver not doing anything?

I have an e-machine computer and I am unable to run, burn or play cd's. What can I check to see if this is a setting problem or a repair/replacement situation. Thanks

    Is it a CD-Rom Drive or a DVD/CD-Rom combo?

    Is this a new problem?

Have you checked your Device Manager?

What is the exact behavior and error messages?

DVD/CD-ROM Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200A is what's installed. This computer is almost a year old.

New problem? Yes, I was able to burn a CD about a week ago.
The device manager says that the device is working properly.
When I put a blank disc in you can hear a noise like it's trying to do something.....then nothing......The system prompts me to insert a disc.

    One of these may help:
    1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
    or...
    2. Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
    Restart computer.
    or...
    3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
    You'll see two items:
    - ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
    - ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

If the above doesn't help, most likely, new drive is due.
