Driver installation issue
Greetings,
OK here goes.. system specs:
Windows XP SP3
Processor Athalon 64X2 Dual Core 3600 2.0Ghz
Mobo MSI K8T Neo2
1GB RAM
Sound Card Audigy 2
Video Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 (and the problem)
My old video card (Radeon 9600) was on the verge of going belly up so got a new AGP card, as im too cheap to upgrade MB to PCI-E, trying to save this one until i buy an entire new machine.
Uninstalled all the old drivers, popped the old card out, popped the new on in, ready to rock and roll. Had already downloaded the most up to date drivers from ATI, so went to install them soon as WIndows rebooted, and nothing. Every time i tried to install, they unpacked, started running, and bang, no drivers for your hardware found, stopping installation. So back to square 1, installed the drivers that actually came on the installation CD. They install ok, however, they are popping up as not signed by Microsoft (not sure if thats an issue or no). Thought maybe had to install original drivers, then update, however they are still refusing to install. Have checked and rechecked that i have the right drivers, got the exact same ones from both ATI and Sapphire. I never install Catalyst, its icky, just the drivers but no luck.
Now i am getting the infamous BSOD randomly. I am a big WoW addict, have noticed it mostlly when alt tabbing out, will just dump to BSOD with page file error Win32.sys or
ATI3duag.dll. Have also gotten BSOD when trying to use ATI Tray tools (which i have always used instead of CCC)
Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, completely deleting all ATI files, and am at my wits end. Its odd that it works with CD drivers, but wont upgrade.
Fingers crossed for the home team, you guys always hit homeruns when i have problems that i cant fix, and hoping for another one here.
Thanks much in advance, will be looking for advice

Can you ID the driver version on the CD?
The latest at ATI is 9.2
ATI Catalyst? Display Driver
Do you know if the motherboard has the latest BIOS?
MSI -- MICRO-STAR INT'L CO., LTD.
Is there some obvious detriment in using the original driver?
-
Ok so.. the version on the install CD is 8.452, and it will install and run, however is causing random BSOD (Win32k.sys and ATI3duag.dll), mostly when either alt tabbing out of games.
Ran the MSI BIOS update and got a newer version and also updated the chipset drivers, so bonus there, but unfortunately no change.
After doing that, ran the install on the 9.2 drivers and still saying no drivers for your hardware or OS, stopping installation.
Any other suggetions before i box it up and send it back and tell them to send me a new one? (that or see how it likes an acetylene torch
)

Do you have an adequate power supply?
450Watt or greater power supply with 30Amps on 12 volt with 2x4 power connector recommanded.
SAPPHIRE HD 3650 512MB GDDR3 AGP
SAPPHIRE HD 3650 512MB GDDR3 AGP

Aye PSU 550W, so should be good there.. However my card is GDDR2 not GDDR3
I ran Everest just for giggles and something rather interesting popped up, will let you check it out
Version EVEREST v2.20.405

How does it show in the Device Manager?
-
Only showing once in Device Manager.
Im wondering if the is a catalyst version between the installation disk and 9.2 that might work and then let it upgrade?
I have a hard time believing the card is bad considering it works with the install drivers, there has to be a disconnect somewhere, we just have to find it and make it reconnect (i am still in favor of acetylene torch)
-
Just to verify:
This card has a power connection and is connected?
Next:
What happens if you tell the Device Manager to update the drivers?
-
Yep it has a power cord, and it is plugged in. My question is how do i know its a valid connection, as when i disconnect it nothing happens, and nothing seems to happen when i unplug it.....
Device Manager tells me no updates availiable
-
Not sure I follow the power question.
Are you saying there is no functional difference whether or not the card is connected to the PSU?
