USB Driver Update Makes Compputer Freeze

Re: USB Driver Update Makes Compputer Freeze
Well I update the media card drivers and still the same picture shows in device manager (After a restart).
Any other ideas?
Also, what is the name of the device that plugs into your network card slot that allows high-speed USB 2.0? And do you think that would freeze my computer (best guess)?

Here are the specs on that laptop:
Product Specifications
I don't really follow about the device. You have a card in the Network slot for USB 2.0?
According to those specs the laptop is already using USB 2.0.
Besides the questions regarding the Device Manager are you having any problems?
Does your USB work?
-
Yes. My USB 3 ports work.
I have a Gateway and when I reformatted, the ports were 1.1 ( I am guessing because when I transfer 1 GB of data to my external, it took 2 hours. I did the same steps, right click update the yellow USB Controller shown in the picture, only that did not freeze on my Gateway. Now 1 GB transfers in 20 seconds (guess).
So, I reformatted my HP and went to do the same, only now it freezes, thus the problem.
I have nothing plugged in or added. When I transfer 1 GB now, it takes like 1-2 hours on the HP, but the picture I posted shows what the device manager shows.
I heard there is a device you plug into your network slot for high speed USB 2.0 ports, any news on that in addition to the info I just provided?

Well your ports should be USB 2.0 but I am getting a better picture of your issue.
When you reinstalled XP was it with the HP Recovery CD?
Or did you use another CD?
If it was the HP CD you should have the HP Health Check. Do you have that installed?
USB drivers for the notebook are part of the chipset. If necessary the USB drivers required by the notebook can be reinstalled from Application recovery.
HP recommends that you use HP Health Check to update your HP BIOS and device drivers.

Just to add:
If your USB 2.0 were working you should see at least one line under USB Controllers listed as "Enhanced"
If you installed an OS other than the original you may have problems resolving this.
You could try the Device Manager driver update in Safe Mode.
Otherwise I'd suggest reinstalling the original OS from HP.

I tried installing them in safe mode with networking and it still freezes. There must be something wrong with the hardware physically for this to be happening. I have never had a problem like this on any other computer.
I do not have the original cd for the HP, I got it from a friend for free (works fine otherwise). I will probably have to call them for it or last case take it in to find out the price of fixing the hardware it self.
I really appreciate all of your help. It seems that we are running out of ideas. All the drivers from HP.com are installed. Tried the Windows Updates. I even downloaded a driver program that found the update but said "WARNING: We will NOT install this driver due to the risk on your computer." So it seems that this problem is rather severe. The good news is at least the USB ports work, just at the speed of 1.1.
Last note, any last thoughts would be appreciated, but if nothing else, thanks again for the offered help.
Warm Regards,
