    Sound Works, Mic Doesn't

OK, here is my problem. I get sound fine from my foobar2000, ventrilo, except I can't speak to my friend on vent. When I play music they can hear it fine, but when I try to talk to them it doesn't even make a static noise. I've tested every possible codec on there. I've updated my Realtek '97 drivers already. Also, when trying to configure my sound (I use a headset), going into sound effect sound only works when it's in 4-channel or 6-channel mode.

I gather that you've ensured the mic is not muted in the mixer utility. (When installing sound drivers or sound associated software, many will automatically mute the mic.) If a "Sound Package" was installed with the AC'97 drivers (Media Player, Recorder, etc), there may be a mixer as well, so check both mixer utilities. Microsoft and the packaged mixer for mic muting.

This could be a motherboard chipset driver problem as well.

Even though AC'97 has already been identified as your sound device, download, install, and run Everest Home Edition on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system. This program will sometimes provide more detailed information.

    Post that information.

Also post the information found for your Motherboard make/model, and the motherboard Chipset.

It looks as though your motherboard may possibly be an ASUS from the posted "KN1", but.......

Try the sound driver from the motherboard page; (It's at the bottom)

Unzip the (30MB) file contents to an empty directory, then run the enclosed SETUP file.

When I test it in vent, the music doesn't even come up anymore heres a pic of the setup I have:

Update: I played music in the channel and a friend told me to stop, so it works in the channel, but not in the test? Very odd.

...Also while testing my sound hardware I couldn't pick up anything. BUT when I put my microphone line in the right port the meter jumps. When it is directly in the meter dies out and I still can't make it go up when I talk.

Just a quick note to let you know I haven't given up on this. I'm researching (as time permits). (The Vent program is fairly comprehensive for someone (me) unfamiliar with it.)

You're 100% sure the mic is operable, right?
