hi, when a pen drive is connected to the USB port, a flash appears saying that a USB mass drive has been connected but the drive is not getting shown in the My Computer list, bcoz of which i'm not able to access files in my pen drive. Can u help me in rectifying this problem. Thanks in advance.

Are you on a network? If you have a mapped network drive using the drive letter that would otherwise be associated with the USB drive, then there's a bug in Windows XP that means that it doesn't move the USB drive on to the next drive letter. The solution is to map the network drive as a different drive letter. I've seen this a few times on business PCs.
