Ventrilo Problems
Hi,
Whenever I join a Ventrilo server I get the following message:
"Unable to initialize outbound codec (GSM 6.10 - 11 KHz, 16 bit): Unable to find the specified codec."
I click OK, I'm still connected, but I can't hear people talk and when I press my push-to-talk button the 'light' stays red as opposed to changing to green (yes, push-to-talk is enabled).
I have tried finding solutions in the following areas:
1st try
2nd try
3rd try
4th try
...and everything they contain... to no avail.
I think the problem is related to me not being able to hear Windows sounds like the logon sound or error message beeps, or any kind of previews (e.g. in sounds and audio devices in Control Panel - the Play button is unclickable, and in my Lingvosoft Talking Dictionary program when I click the preview button I hear no sound). I am also unable to hear sound when viewing online videos - e.g. on YouTube, etc. I can, however, listen to music on Windows Media Player (and can open and listen to the Windows sounds here) and also watch films with sound included.
I think this started when I was scrolling down my web browser page using my scroll button below my touchpad. The focus went to my firewall update window (obviously not scrollable) and I continued to individually press the scroll button (which, in an unscrollable window, causes error beeps - "Windows XP Exclamation") and by the time I had reacted (about 4th press) I stopped hearing the error beeps and from then on my scroll button has not worked, and I have had these sound problems.
I am using a Ferrari 4002WMLi laptop (except that mine cost £650 from this site but I can't find that one - not much difference though!).
OS: Windows XP.
Thanks.
Edit: looks like this guy was having a similar problem to me as I also cannot get the audio icon to display in the system tray (could before the other problems arose)... http://www.laptoplogic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1310

Also, in 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in Control Panel, under the 'Voice' tab, when I select 'Realtek AC97 Audio' under 'Voice Playback' and click OK, then go back to the same tab it returns to deselected.
The same happens with the 'MIDI Music Playback' under the 'Audio' tab - the available option is 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth', if I select it, click OK and go back it's deselected again.
I just cannot set them.
Don't know what this means, but it seems relevant.
