virus maybe causing my cd/dvd not to respond???

help i have only had my pc since July 2005 and I have had problems with my CD/DVD RW not responding...

it is showing in the Device Manager - with a 'Caution sign in a yellow circle'... when you right click this and shows that a 'Code 41' error has occured. Shows that the Hardware is there but my pc is having trouble locating it....

    Can anyone help...

I have been told by someone that it could be 2 things:

    1) Ive deleted another software program which was connected/linked to the Cd/DVD drive
    2) I have Viruses from Chat rooms or maybe when I was exploring some porn sites that I had been asked to 'check out' by mates... in the past...

    thank you in advance...

You didn't mention what O/S you're running. The following is XP and Windows 2000 related.

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

    On a more severe level:

This involves editing your registry so it's suggested you create a restore point prior to editing the registry.

It also mentions Easy CD Creator, but based upon a websearch, this fix has fixed the error 41 problem even if you don't have this software.

    Read the following MSKB article:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...BLN%5D;q314060

Prior to editing the registry, (if you can get online with this machine) I'd also run an up to date virus scan:
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

and run a thorough malware scan with any such software you may have. (Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, etc.)
