Unhappy Windows XP wont recognise my External Hard Drive!

I have recently purchased a Vaio USB 2.0 External Hard Disk Drive. When I plug it into my computer (Toshiba Satellite with Windows XP) it "bings" to let me know its been recognised, and shows up in the "Safely Remove Hardware" options but not in "My Computer". I've looked at other tech help sites & they suggested going to Disk Management & assigning a drive letter to it, but i can't do that as it doesnt show up in Disk Management. It shows up under Device Manager, Disk Drive & it says there that the device appears to be working fine.
really don't know what to do!! HELP!!
Have all the latest windows/microsoft updates/Service packs etc...

    Hi and welcome to D-A-L

Have you tried the drive on another PC to eliminate a faulty drive?

    have you tried.

Disconnecting the external drive from its power supply, and then disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable at the external drive (with the computer on)

are you running it through a hub or connected straight to the PC?

Just in case you get this did you ever reolve your problem because i have exactly the same fault and my Pc wont install new hardware. It initially finds it but says there is a problem then in device manager it states no drivers.
