Lost both my DVD & CD Drives

All started when I updated Musicmatch. Then I could not burn a CD - would not recognize a CD in the drive. Device manager said it was working ok. Tried uninstalling MM then reinstalling but did not work. Compac sent me a new drive. Installed and same thing. Now I have uninstalled MM completely. Device manager has yellow !! on both DVD Rom Drive and CD RW Drive. When I try to troubleshoot has error 39 - driver is corrupt or missing. I uninstalled drivers and reinstalled. I tried to find another driver but can't find one. (Oak Technology 3.1.21.1103.) Computer is just over 1 year old. I have restore CD's made as no hardware comes with computer but without any drives, can I even wipe clean and start over. (last resort) Any ideas.

    Is this XP? If so:

In the device manager right click each drive & choose Uninstall. (not the driver but the device).

Then reboot & XP will reload the drivers.

Yes, I am using XP. I did that twice. It picks them up but they have the yellow ! on them. I used System Restore and went back 2 weeks. I did recover the drives but I can't uninstall Musicmatch or ICQ. Also I still cannot burn. My daughter got her own computer so I was trying to take her stuff off so mine would run faster (we only have access to dial up) I had just uninstalled MM and ICQ when this all happened. I went in manually and deleted what I could but still have a lot of their folders etc. Any ideas how to get my burner to work. It says to put a CD in the drive when there is one already in it.

What exactly do you mean by: "I can't uninstall Musicmatch or ICQ"? Do you get errors or what happens?

Also what do you mean by: "Compac sent me a new drive"? A new hard drive? Or a new CD drive? Did you reinstall XP?

In general XP loads its' own drivers for optical drives. Are you saying that this behavior continued past a reinstall of XP? If you haven't reinstalled XP do you have the Compaq disk in order to do so? Also what is the exact Compaq model? Are you familiar with the Recovery procedures?
    Uninstall Programs Manually

Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

    *

Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

To remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present) open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, locate and delete the service.
    *

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
    and delete the entry.
Also run a Registry Cleaner. I recommend: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

It said it could not uninstall ICQ because a log was missing. For MM it came up with "encountered an error". After Tech support had me try a bunch of stuff they decided my CD burning drive must be bad so they sent me a new one. I installed it and same thing. It is listed in the device manager and says it is working properly. But if you try to burn or even just put a CD in the drive, it says there is no disc in the drive. It worked fine until MM. My daughter got an MP3 player that used MM. After putting MM on it was ok for a few months until it needed to upgrade. Then she couldn't download on the MP3 or burn CDs. We tried System restore then but it wouldn't work. We uninstalled MM then reinstalled it. Then she could download to the MP3 but not burn. I have Record Now and Windows Media that came on my computer and you can't burn with any of them. It seems there is just something missing. I have heard others having problems with MM. My daughter just got a new computer 2 weeks ago that came with MM. It won't open, freezes the computer and won't burn either. I have a Compac Presario S6030NX. It did not come with any discs. I did make 7 CDs for the Recovery a week after I got it. I have never done it but my sister has. I am hoping for that as a last resort. I run a business on my computer and can't be without it. By using the recovery, I will lose a lot of my stuff. It has been like this for a few months. Everything works fine except for that. I don't need to burn music but I can't burn anything to save.

I would try the manual uninstall steps for ICQ & MM & perhaps all burning software. Plus the registry cleaner.

XP has a built-in capacity to burn CD's. If all you need is the basics.

You can also run a NON-Destructive Recovery that should preserve your data while reinstalling XP. Compaq has the details:
    Presario S6030NX
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/p...product=391278

Select one of the following procedures, depending on which recovery type you want to perform:
To perform a system recovery, click Next, and then click Yes
To perform a destructive recovery, click Advanced, (select Destructive Recovery) and then click Next.
CAUTION: A destructive recovery will format the hard drive. This will delete all the information on the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP and the original software that came with the computer.
