    Lost all my disc drives

Uninstalled Pinnacle (video editing suite) and has damaged drivers for floppy, Cd & DVD drives. They don't show on windows explorer or anywhere else. Do show as ! on device manager. Tried to re-install but get "code 37". Tried to roll back driver, but no backup there.

Machine not connected to internet and cannot use drives, therefore can't install internet and get downloads. Won't read XP disc when put in drive, although one drive does spin the disc, but doesn't react to it.

    Any ideas out there?

Is your hard drive working? Is XP installed? Can you get into XP?

    Code 37
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

    Recommended resolution

The driver returned failure from its DriverEntry routine. Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

    Thanks Jephree
Tried that but uninstall/reinstall just returns a message that the driver has an error.
    The trouble shooter does similar.
Still end up with no drives and the "!" on the device manager list.

I have downloaded the driver for one of the drives onto a memory stick which the PC recognises but I don't know how to load it. Isn't a straightforward install wizard and wants to load onto autoexec through MSDOS, which is beyond me.

XP should not require any external drivers for removable media drives.

That being said I have no idea what Pinnacle did to your registry.

Obviously I don't know where your comfort level is with your machine, but I would try these steps:

    1. Make sure that you have totally removed the Pinnacle software.*

    2. Delete the drivers for all these devices.

    3. Open the case & remove the ribbon & power cables from all these devices.

    4. Reboot with none of these devices attached.

    5. Shut-down & begin the process of re-installing one device at a time. Rebooting in-between.
    Start with floppy.
    Then DVD. (Master)
    Then CD. (slave)

    Uninstall Programs Manually

Just because Windows XP has the Add/Remove Programs feature it doesn't mean your application will appear in the list. Furthermore, even if it does appear, it's no guarantee that the uninstall feature will work. When you run across one of these situations the items listed below will help in getting rid of the application. Be aware that these steps may not remove everything associated with the application and can impact other applications on the computer. Have a backup or restore point and use caution.

    *

Find the directory for the application and delete all the files in the directory. Delete the directory.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

To remove the application entry from Add/Remove Programs (if present) open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall and find the folder for the application. Delete the folder.
    *

Some applications have Services attached to them. If this is the case, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es, locate and delete the service.
    *

In Windows Explorer, navigate to the individual user settings and delete program references. Common places to check would be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]
C:\Documents and Settings\%YourUserID%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and delete relevant entries.
[Do this for each User ID listed]

If no entries were found in the previous step and the application launches automatically, navigate to
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
    and delete the entry.

Thanks Jephree. Tried below but still didn't work. In the end I found 'system restore' and back dated a year. That enabled the drives, even if with old drivers. Then able to download updated drivers from net.

Your help very much appreciated. Hope above might be useful for you one day.

    Best wishes
