Laptop will only boot in safe mode - claims 'the device driver got stuck'. Please Help!

    Hello,
I am running a toshiba laptop satellite pro a60 en with service pack 2.
It has never been connected to the internet, and has nothing more than championship manager and a few word documents loaded on it.
this morning i turned it on and if refuses to load in anything other than safe mode. i have no idea what precipitated this. if you try and 'load normal mode' or 'load last good configuration' it flashes up a blue screen with lots of writing, the most of which i caught is 'the device driver got stuck' for about half a second, then returns to the 'run safe mode?' screen.
i have tried system restore to several differant dates, which makes no differance. in another thread on another topic it was suggested to look for ' VMM32.VXD'. i do not have a clue what this is, but the 'find files or folders' search comes up negative. is this because it isnt a file or folder?
i think that is all the information i have. if anyone has any ideas i would be eternally grateful. i have the windows disks, but i have photos and word documents i would like to keep, which i am unable to get off as the computer refuses to recognise usb memory sticks. would reinstalling windows help?
i'm sure you guys get asked this one all the time, but any suggestiongs would be really appreciated.
    thanks very much.
    T

With a full version XP CD you can use the Recovery Console for starters.

To start the computer and use the Recovery Console

    From the Setup CD-ROM

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console. When prompted, type the Administrator password. At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

    I would first try CHKDSK

If that doesn't help try FIXBOOT

Another possibility if you can boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt & or use the RUN box from Safe Mode you can try to run: sfc /scannow

For further details on the error you might try the Event Viewer:
rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
