You probably just need to reload the driver.

Although that is a common Audio chip we need to verify your make & model of motherboard.

Or the make & exact model of the computer.

Run this scan & post back the info under:
    System Model as well as:
    Main Circuit Board

    See here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-1.aspx

Beware, Realtek has the slowest web server i've ever seen

Since I found this thread on a google search for the very title, I thought I'd simply resurrect this old thread to ask the question... I have the same problem...

So to answer the questions, after running belarc, I have...

    System Model
    PCCHIPS P21G 1.0
    Enclosure Type: Desktop

    Main Circuit Board

    Board: PCCHIPS P21G 1.0
    Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 080012 09/22/2005

This was originally an HP XP media center, but burnt the mother board and had it replaced... the sound hasn't worked since.

Also, the above link to RealTek is outdated.

    Thanks!

    Audio drivers
    --------------------------------------------------
The best source for audio drivers is the computer manufacturers web site.

If the computer was custom built then go to the motherboard manufacturers web site.

Go to the driver download section and insert your model number. The drivers will be there.

If you are one of the very few people that actually installed a PCI "Sound Card" then you should have the drivers CD for that card or again go to that manufacturers web site.
