Computer restarts

Re: Computer restarts
First off: do you have a manual where you could discover the intended use & effect of that Recover XP CD?
There should be one online if you don't have it.
Any change running without the printer etc.?

Hi jephree,
I tried to do the DAL hardware scan 3 more times, I've posted the results below.
I do have the manuals that came with the system. What do you,(or I) need to know?
Disconnecting the printer seemed to have no effect, as I had 2 more restarts with it disconnected.
However, I've left it disconnected, and disconnected everything else not essential as well.
Here is what the hardware scan produced:

Search the manual for "Recover XP"
What are the options?
Most likely this CD will restore XP to the "factory settings", unfortunately it will remove all other data.
But maybe your CD will do other things as well. Every manufacturer does different things.
-
There is no mention in either manual of the "Recover XP" disk.
(Read both, cover to cover)
What about the missing file: Win32k.sys?
Was the hardware scan any help? Is it normal for there to be so little information on it?
I KNOW the memory can't be right.
-
The hardware scan was blank. I don't know why
As to Win32k.sys you do have the main file
C:\WINDOWS\system32
File version 5.1.2600.2180
Multi-User Win32 Driver
I have about twice as many as you but they are all in the $uninstall area
Can you post the exact make & model of your PC?
Otherwise what happens when you insert & open the Recovery CD?
What options does it offer?

I tried the hardware scan 3 more times, same results. Could my firewall be preventing it from scanning? I run a very tight stealth mode.
As to Win32k.sys you do have the main file
C:\WINDOWS\system32
File version 5.1.2600.2180
Multi-User Win32 Driver
I'm not sure, looking in my system C:\WINDOWS\system 32, I don't see a file named WIN32k.sys. Is there a file folder in System32 that I should look in?
However, on the Recover XP CD I DID locate the file WIN32K.sys. I copied it and put it on my desktop.
Can you post the exact make & model of your PC?
Where would I find that information?
Otherwise what happens when you insert & open the Recovery CD?
A window opens that says: Files on CD
and shows 8 folders, named: I386, LANPLUS, CRC.SFV, QSFV221.exe, WIN51, WIN51IP,
WIN51IP.SP1, and WINBOM.INI
What options does it offer?
I'm not sure what you're asking. When I insert the disk and open it I get the window described above.
Thanks for your patience with my lack of tech knowledge,
Hawk

when you searched earlier you found:
Search results for Win32k.sys
Found 3
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
File Version 5.1.2600.1106
Multi-User Win32 Driver
C:\WINDOWS\system32
File version 5.1.2600.2180
Multi-User Win32 Driver
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
file version 5.1.2600.2180
Multi-User Win32 Driver
If you open the system32 folder you will see it there.
As to make & model: for example I am using a Hewlett Packard Vectra VLI8 SP
What does your manual say?
There must be some info on using that recovery disk
-
Yes, I found the Win32k.sys file.
How much trouble is it to replace the hard drive? This thing is dragging out much too long, it's killing my business and costing me a fortune. I feel like I would be better off to just replace the hard drive, reinstall Windows, and the other proggies, if it's something I could do myself. What do you think, jephree?
-
I think you should run your recovery disk to return the machine to its' factory settings.
I see no indication that your hard drive is a problem, plus, you would then have to buy another operating system.
Your OEM XP only exists on that machine & via that recovery disk.
If you know the hard drive make it can be tested via the manufacturer's diagnostics.
Also if we knew the computer make & model we could try to find the instructions on using that recovery disk.
Here is a good overall scan that will i.d. your drive & computer & a bunch of other stuff:

I'm having a hard time staying online long enough to do any kind of scan. It took me 20 mins. to get to this site, I had 4 freeze ups and 3 restarts. What does win32k.sys DO? I keep getting a blue screen that says if it's caused by a driver to disable it. CAN I disable it, and my pc still function?
My computer is a NorthGate LanPlus, I tried to go to their web site but AOHell keeps giving me an error message saying :Can't find that site... THEN it gives me a list of matching sites IDENTICAL to the one they can't find. When I click on one of the link they provide, I get the SAME FREAKING ERROR MESSAGE!!!
I can't even get House Call to work, I get error messages saying the files didn't load properly! And you SAW how the D-A-L Hardware scan came out! MAN! I'm ready to pull my F---in' hair out!!!
