I installed a new driver for my graphics card, and it went out 3 times last month. Hasn't happened this one, and AVG has not found any viruses in the machine. Is it a good idea to get a second virus scanner?

No absolutly not, running 2 antivirus programs will cause conflicts. A better idea is to do some online scans. Choose one or more from Here.

probably about as long as your AVG scan.
trend micro runs faster than most (20min). bit defender the longest (60min)(it scans about 4 times as many files as trend or norton)
they will run in the background.
