    external harddrive.. can i put

can i put windows in one to make my programs work? Like if I put my msn program on there or my graphics program, could I use them from my G: drive? Or would I have to put Windows xp on there first? Thanks for any help

    Hey Kizzmit5

Here is a post from the search link below it. Hope this helps:

I would not recommend installing programs on the external
drive, since most modern programs also toss a few files on
C:\ and modify the registry. Fully-self-contained
programs could be run from an external drive. The
operating system must be on an internal drive, floppy, or
    CD.

Any PC running XP should be able to access an external
drive within seconds after it is plugged into the PC. You
should not need to provide drivers. Of course, the very
first time you plug it in, you may need to format the
disk. Use te XP disk management tool.

The only exception to easy access is if you have used the
power of XP and NTFS format to protect files. Then, I am
less certain of whether general access will be granted.
If you use FAT32 on the external drive, protection is
essentially non-existant, and anyone can access the files.

Hi jephree , good to see you.

Thank you so much for all your help. I do have another quick question if you could help. My computer keeps getting hot still and is turning off even when I have an external fan on so I was going to try to clean the heatsink but I wanted to make sure I did it correctly. I just need some instructions of how to do it that have pics. I found a site before but I can't find it and since then I haven't been able to find it again. I have been looking for a few days and I don't think i'm looking with the right words or something. I get a few sites with pics but they don't show me where my heatsink is for my computer. I have a vaio PCG-GRV680. I saw one that got to it through the bottom of the laptop but I'm not sure thats where mine is. Last time I thought it was under my keyboard so i really don't want to start if i don't know what i'm doing, ya know? Should I put this on another topic or.. something lol? Sorry if i'm not in a good spot. I'm just tired of it turning off when i'm in the middle of something and i don't want it to ruin anything in it. Thanks a bunch for any help

well i found the manual here

    vaio pcg-grv

the only internal option it shows is to replace the RAM, which is on the bottom/ middle.

not being familiar with notebooks, i dont even know if you can open it up.

    did you ever run Everest?

it could ID the motherboard from which we could find where the processor is.
