    Question Access 2000 importing problem

    Hi
I am importing 9k rows from excel into an access database. The size of the database on my PC remains around 10mb. However when I copy this database to colleagues PC,s the database size increases to 50mb after performing the import.
I have checked that there are only 9k records (ie the import is not importing the whole excel file c.64k rows). The increase in the file size is causing the database to freeze. If I do a compact the database file size returns to 10mb.

What am I doing differently on my colleagues PC?

It just sounds to me like you need to refresh the screen on your colleague's PC to see the file size increase from 10Mb to 50Mb. I suspect that you're seeing the size in Windows Explorer and it's just not updating the display until you force it to refresh (hit F5 or click in a different folder and then go back to where you were before).

Because the database started at around 10Mb, it does make sense that it would compact down to about 10Mb after you've finished the import. Access is rather inefficient in keeping the file size down during periods of large data manipulation.

If that's not the answer, then are you using the same version of Windows and Access?

The PCs have the same image. It was copied from the original and installed on the other PCs. So same version.
The dbase does actually increase in size. So that if I import 3 times the size increases to 150 mb. After this the dbase just dies.
I have checked that the settings are the same in both PCs. So on my colleagues PC it is doing something different. But what?
