Yes I think it's supposed to be .wav sound file.

WAVE File Format is a file format for storing digital audio (waveform) data. It supports a variety of bit resolutions, sample rates, and channels of audio. With the introduction of MP3 which has a higher bit resolution and better compression, WAVE or .wav is not usually the chosen format for sending/storing music as it is lower quality and larger in file size.

You can convert your .WAV files to MP3 - use the Google search above and search for something like Convert WAV to MP3, you will be able to download some different apps to do this. Back to your question though! Yes you can send the WAV file via email, if you do choose WAV though and it is quite large in file size then you may want to ZIP it first using something like WinZip - http://www.winzip.com
