    Genealogy: Generations 4.2

I have used Generations 4.2 on my previous computers (98 and xp) I tried to install the disc in my HP that has windows7 and it will not load. This is apparently because this computer is 64 bit. I hate to lose all this data. Is there any way I can bring this up to date?

    Thanks, mandmt

Since Generations was bought out by Ancestry.com in 2002, it is not likely there is a current version that will work. I also note that V4.2 was old then as V8.0 was out when Sierra announced they were stopping development in 2001. It may be a 64-bit issue, but I suspect it is just because Ancestry is so old, it will not run on any Windows 7 (or Vista) platform.

Your best bet may to run Generations on your old machine and export the data to a file, then import it into Ancestry.com or some other genealogy program. I suggest you contact tech support for the new program, of if they have a forum, post your question there.

Sorry it took me so long to answer but have been having a heck of a time trying to log in to the reply. I was unaware that Generation 4.2 had been bought by Ancestry.com. I have all the info on a disc and folder. I'll have to find a program that will work and buy it. I have the info on the computer in Legacy 7 but it will only print out a few of the ancestors.
    Thanks for the info, thumudom

Well, depending on which version of Windows you have, you might be able to run Windows XP Mode. But I think the longer you wait to upgrade and migrate all your data to current software, the harder the task it will become.

I downloaded, a couple of hours ago, RootsMagic, a free program just to see how it worked and it only allowed so many generations. It was a little difficult to use in trying to import. There a couple more free ones to try. I try a few more to see how difficult it would be to download. Once I find one Ill buy. I have my wife's ancestry, which goes back about 16 generations and mine about 14. I just hate to lose all that. Especially the cost of getting another researcher to fill it all in again.

I have Window 7, 64 bit. Amazon has quite a few programs at a reasonable price.

Nothing. There was a major problem with my login and I had to use, for some dumb reason, an old user name. D-A-L would not accept mandmt, so I forgot to sigh off with it and used thumudom, which is now my user name. I'll have to make a good mental note of that.
