Have had trouble since July, can't install Automatic Updates. Tried turning off anti-virus, set Service to Automatic instead of Manual, have done multiple registry scan/repairs thru various programs. Saw a suggestion somewhere that I'd have to uninstall Office 2003 and re-install. So that's where I am now - it's uninstalled, but I can't re-install it!

If you did a clean install of Win7 last month, you'll do another clean install of Win7. IOW you don't need to install Vista first.

Since you'll be doing a clean install of Win7, there won't be any free-trialware so just need to take care of EVERYTHING on the following page BEFORE otherwise connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) AND BEFORE connecting a flash drive, SDCard, or any other external drive to the computer:

1. Format the HDD then do the clean install of Win7.

2. IMMEDIATELY install Microsoft Security Essentials.

4. Leave Automatic Updating enabled but you might wanna change your setting from Automatic to Download updates but let me choose... That way, no updates will install without your Approval; assume an update will require a reboot so don't Approve the install unless & until you're willing to reboot.
