I burnt some word files to a cd and then copied them to another pc desktop from the cd, I removed the read only attribute so that i can modify thme as/when required but when i open a file to view only and then close the file I am asked do I want to save changes although I have not made any changes. Can anyone clarify why this is please ?

This is quite a common issue in a whole variety of programs. Could be a number of reasons. Is the desktop PC running a different version of Word than the PC that they were copied from? - perhaps it's converting them to the latest version itself, which is a change, even though you didn't instigate it.

Perhaps it's reformatting the page slightly when you open it on the desktop PC because it has a different printer?

Perhaps you have a Normal.DOT template file that is modified on one of the two PCs and is affecting the way it's opened and displayed?
