    help

I was on my Hp pc surfin when it locked up and the tower just starting beeping. I turned it off, unplugged it, unplugged the modem and router several times but it just keeps beeping and a blank screen on the monitor. Very strange, anyone ever heard of this happening?

    Thx......Sal

    Hi Sal

According to HP's beep error List

2 Short - 1 is Unable to initialize video or video card required but not installed

BIOS Beep Codes HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7667c Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Which suggests you have a faulty Graphics card.

The spec for your PC shows your Graphics card to be a VGA GeForce 7500LE

Product Specifications - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

You could try removing and reseating the card just to ensure its not a bad connection.

If you or a friend as an old PC that contains a VGA (not a PCI) Graphics card you could try
removing that and installing it in yours.
It doesn't matter what graphics cards memory is, as long as its a VGA card.
If it is the card. Installing another will get basic windows graphics running.
You don't necessarily need the cards drivers to get the PC's basic video running.

If you can do that and the alternative card works. You can install the cards drivers
to improve graphics. If you don't have the working cards driver disc.
Post back with the cards model number and we can help to locate the drivers.

Well I'm hoping I figured it out. I pulled every board out of the computer I could one at a time to see if the beeping would stop. The culprit was the modem board where the phone line plugs in. HP wants $44 for a new one. Everything seems to be working fine without it. Do I even need this card?

Thx Jim for your help and Merry Christmas..........Sal

The part no. for the video card is 5188-5456. Hp's web site says to contact them when I enter the p/n. Can a generic card wk instead?

Sorry for not replying sooner been busy enjoying the festive season.

HP documentation says you have a Asus Motherboard Name: P5BW-LA

Their documentation for this board shows you have an integrated graphics card.
So until you can disable that and put something in its place you cannot rule out
the possibility that your on-board card is faulty.

Motherboard Specifications, P5BW-LA (Buckeye) HP Pavilion Media Center a1642x Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

It also shows you have a PCI Express x16 graphics slot

So if you have access to a spare PCI Express graphics card you could disable onboard graphics in the bios. Then install PCI Express graphics card and see if the PC is now OK.

It would be beneficial to you to first test that your PC will work by the method suggested above first. Because if it does.
You could then purchase a decent PCI Express x16 graphics card. Which would have
the added benefit of upgrading your PC.
You don't want to spend good money on a card up grade
if it will not remedy your problem and the only way to test this is disable your
onboard graphics and install a PCI Express graphics card.
