    Search and Recover 3.0

I have tried to install a data recovery programme called Search and Recover 3.0. I am unable to open it either from the desktop icon or Programmes listing. A window has opened on occasions saying “Nt_read error/error no. 1167/drv: 129 LBA: 0 blocks: 1/Abort, Retry or Ignore”

Only when this window has opened and I click on Ignore has the programme appeared to open.

I’ve run a read scan on the installation disk which found no problems.

I’m running XP home and have never experienced this problem in five years of installing programmes on my PC. However, assuming there may be an access problem on my hard drive, I ran a reliable hard drive scanner which found no read problems either.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hello Softix

Thanks for the reply, but I wish it was that easy. I've tried uninstalling and reinstallling several times, including removing all traces from the registry, without success.

I've read about this error being associated with a couple of Data Recovery programs. (Programs internal response to disk reading difficulties.)

It indicates there may be a problem with the hard disk. It may be in the first stages of failure. You state the machine (therefore the hard disk too I imagine) is five years old.

"I’ve run a read scan on the installation disk which found no problems.....I ran a reliable hard drive scanner which found no read problems either."

    If the above mentioned scanner was not by the disk manufacturer, I suggest you download and run the manufacturers disk analysis tool for your disk;

Hard Disk Analysis & Setup Tools - Major Manufacturers

Post back with your results and any further questions.

    Hello Dan

I have in the meantime used Seagate's own HD diagnostic software and it passed all five types of scan, including every sector.

I experimentally downloaded the trial version of Search and Recover 4.0 and it loaded and opened without any problem! It's odd that the previous version won't.

Odd indeed. It could be that your download of Search and Recover 3.0 was somehow corrupted. (A packet or two of information was lost during the download?)

    Glad your up and running.

    Hello again Dan

You've read something into my reply that isn't there. I'm certainly not up and running. All I said was that the Seagate diagnostic software seemed to find nothing wrong with my hard drive. Search and Recovery 3.0 still will not open.

The software wasn't a download; I purchased a CD and the third party vendor has even sent me a second CD, which has made no difference. I tried loading the programme in Safe Mode and when I restarted the PC the warning window opened again, offering me the choice of Ignoring, which I did and the programme would open. I thought this had cracked it. However, when I restarted the PC again, no window opened and I could not open the programme again.

The vendor has referred me back to the manufacturer, who has yet to offer me any reply.
